Macfisheries Shop, 14 Spring Gardens, Buxton
5 January 1937
(Currently Buxton Pets)
Macfisheries was a popular chain of fishmongers founded by William Hesketh Lever, the co-founder of Lever Brothers, who made most of their fortune selling soap. As you can see, the shop has an open front where customers could serve themselves. Although common and unremarkable these days, this would have been quite radical at the time. Macfisheries began in the 30s and declined in the 60s, losing out to larger wholesalers and supermarkets. Our interviewees can still recall the powerful aroma of fresh fish whilst walking past, and for one of them, their first job out of school was at this shop.
