E.C. Milligans, 32 Spring Gardens, Buxton
27 February 1940
(Demolished, Argos is now on the site)
E.C. Milligan’s Drapery and Milliner’s (hat-making) shop, to give its full title, had a very distinctive colonnade frontage. You can also see some cars in this photograph that are very distinctive of the 1940s. Established by John Milligan in 1849 and succeeded by his son E.C. Milligan, Arthur James Potter eventually bought the business. Potter became Mayor of the Borough of Buxton in the early 1930s and was also the proprietor of Potters, which is still trading today. Milligans was demolished in the 1970s but had so much character that older residents of the town still remember it fondly.
